I have been reading a fair amount of theology this year. One of the recurrent themes from my reading has been the centrality of the cross. And through the power of hind-site I have come to realize the more I read and concentrated on the cross, the liveliness of my faith diminished. For I discovered when we solely concentrate on the cross, we get stuck there. We get stuck in our sins. We get stuck in our sinfulness. We get stuck in the mire of our sins. We get stuck in the hopelessness of our sins. And we get stuck with the hopelessness of the sins around us. And it is through sin we die.
The other day I was at Koorong and was quietly praying about some books to read and I picked up The Cross Is Not Enough, Living As Witnesses To The Resurrection. This morning while sitting in the bath and reading it, I felt my the liveliness of my faith raise up once again. I felt the hope of Christ empower and inspire me as I read how the resurrection of Christ is the true linchpin of our Christian faith.
Paul boldly states in Romans 4:25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
For it is through the resurrection we gain the full exchange of life and discover that our sins are truly put to death. For it is through the resurrection we are completely justified. In death, Christ was powerless to justify us before the living God. While on the cross and while lying in the burial tomb – the result of sin was complete death. It’s through the resurrection that life flows. It’s through the resurrection of Christ we find life. It’s through the resurrection of Christ we find true joy. It’s through the resurrection we find forgiveness. It’s through the resurrection of Christ we find the new birth. It’s through the resurrection of Christ we find the power and the person of the Holy Spirit flowing. It’s through the resurrection of Christ we discover the gift of eternal life. It’s through the resurrection of Christ we can boldly claim with confidence we are justified with God. It’s through the resurrection we can witness to the truth of the living God. And its only through the resurrection we can truly live for God. For in the resurrection, we have been given a promise. A promise that we too are included in the resurrection.
Through the resurrection of Christ, we are granted new life. A bold life. A complete life. A renewed life. A purposeful life. A empowered life. An inspired life. And through the resurrection we discover a valued life. And its through the resurrection we will find the truth that death can not hold us down.
