There is a yearning for us all to live simplified lives within a complex societal environment that is continually frustrated by its yearning for more. Within this frustrated and broken societal framework Jesus calls us to simply follow him. But, while the call to follow is simple; following him breaks all the societal norms around us and comes at a cost.
I was reading Luke this afternoon and turned to the page which records Jesus as saying…
To you who are listening I say to you: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn the other also. If someone takes your coat, give them your shirt also. Give to all who ask and don’t demand back what is taken from you. Do to others as you would have them go to you. Lend without expecting repayment. Do not judge and condemn and you wont be judged and condemned. Be merciful as God is merciful.
Jesus then says, why do you call me Lord, Lord and not do what I tell you to do. I want you to put into practice these words which I tell you. I ask you, are you one who truly calls Jesus Lord?
