Appeasing the gods.

I have been having an interesting conversation with Nic about the nature of the prosperity gospel

The prosperity Gospel (i.e., the form of it that emphasizes material blessings) seems to me to make God impotent. If God’s will is for all believers to prosper financially then his will has never come to pass. Ever. If God can’t get his will to come about, ever, then how can he be all-powerful?

I made the comment that its like someone trying to appease the gods because of our lack…and because of our constant lack we can never have enough. Nic then made the observation that its a role reversal.. We become the gods- throwing him our scraps – expecting him to pay homage to us with material blessings.

The fact is God did indeed come to us on bended knee. Not to subjugate us – instead to restore relationship with us. And if God becomes the desire of our hearts – then God indeed shall be our reward…and we shall no longer treat him as our servant.
