Modern preaching and the early church

I have been thinking about the way the modern church preaches and its sermon content and topics. This reflection has caused me to stop, think and ask the questions if our sermonising matches that of the early church. By this: I mean – would the early church fathers – Peter, Luke, Paul, John, etc recognise our sermon material as being theirs.

Would they for instance recognise and approve the various debates about Calvinism / Arminianism? Would they recognise TULIP, health / wealth and the various discussions as to how to run church.

This causes me to ask the following questions in thinking through our modern culture and the beginning of the church era…

  1. What are the similarities?
  2. What are the differences?
  3. What are the essentials?
  4. What are the non essentials?

Perhaps you have your own other questions to ask. What ever they may be – I think these are good questions to ask.
