The people of NSW are not stupid; though the current Labourr government may think we are. Eric Roozendaal the NSW treasurer forced through a sale of the NSW owned electrical supplies. The then NSW premier called the NSW governor to formally announce the proroguing of parliament. This means to discontinue a session of (a legislative assembly) without dissolving it.
Proroguing doesn’t mean that the assemble has been dissolved, it means that the sitting assembly has been dismissed and therefore has no sitting rights. Meaning that if the assembly is not sitting; nothing can be debated or enquired upon, yet the government can continue working as usual….
The premier Kristina Keneally has already said that she would call a state election next year in March / April and it is normal to have parliament dissolved a month before the election. However this is a different kettle of fish. For she has not dissolved the assembly of parliament for the upcoming election; rather she has done to it avoid any parliamentary scrutineering of the terms of the sale a fact to which Roozendaal has admitted. The board which was given the charge of overseeing the sale; was also rife with controversy. For at least 8 members of the board resigned in protest at the way this sale was being pushed through.
While on the surface it may appear that 5.3 billion dollars is a lot of money; and indeed no one denies that it isn’t. In light of the total worth of the assets; which are considered to be worth between 10 to 15 billion, someone it appears is getting ripped off. This would be like the government coming to you and saying we are going to sell your home which is worth $300, 000; but we are only going to give you $100,000 for it.
The assets of the state of NSW do not belong to any political party; instead they belong to the people of NSW and the sitting government is responsible to look after those assets with all due diligence. And it appears that this has not been done.
I applaud the 4 upper house members who have defied the governments attempt of silencing any enquiry in their inquiry of the matter. It would appear that the current governments actions have back fired and blown up in their face. So to this renegade upper house committee I say… all power or the force be with you…..
