I picked up Eugene Peterson’s book; Eat This Book; the art of spiritual reading today for the affordable price of $14:95. I was looking for his book The The Contemplative Pastor: Returning to the Art of Spiritual Direction; but they had sold out.
I started to read his book tonight and like his previous books that I have read, I was not disappointed. Take for instance what he says on page 24 about the Scriptures for spiritual formation.
It is the very nature of language to form rather than inform. When language is personal, which it is at its best, it reveals; and revelation is always formative – we don’t know more, we become more.
It is through the totality of engaging with the Scriptures; that we are able to to engage with the author of life true and spirituality takes place. Until then any form of spirituality will leave us without the true knowledge of who we truly are and made to be; and without this knowledge; any form of spirituality will be self centred and selfish for it cannot show the fullness of the purpose in which we are fearfully and wonderfully made and therefore true community cannot take shape.
